Over the last several months I've had the pleasure to meet quite a few interesting individuals who took advantage of my Deal Saver in the N and O. I hope I have inspired them to seek out more painting opportunities and classes here at Artful Endeavors.

The most important attribute to possess is the interest in art and painting, and the desire to learn. If painting is something that is interesting to you, you will be successful. My goal is for you to enjoy painting and be stimulated by new techniques and creative processes.

We have some different options available for continuing classes. Simply Art workshops are 1 time classes where you will complete a painting in 3 hrs. The goal of these classes is to present techniques in order to complete the painting while having fun and inspiring more painting. These classes are great for those of you who are new to painting but also fun and challenging to more experienced painters. All supplies and surface are included. Check Simply Art Class schedule.

We also offer Basics in Decorative Painting classes. Through this 4 week series of 3 hr classes you will learn the basic techniques that we use as a foundation to our painting while painting one design. Over the 4 weeks you will paint and practice to become familiar with these important techniques and skills. Did you buy the Deal Saver for the Introduction to Acrylic Painting? Here is the schedule and a little class information to answer your question. This is a project oriented class and the goal is to give you a taste of decorative painting and hopefully make you want to paint more.

Welcome to an Introduction to Acrylic Painting art class, taught by Liz Miller, CDA. No previous experience is needed to enjoy this class.

The package for this three-hour course includes a canvas and all art supplies at the class. Class size will be limited to 10 – 12 students with a minimum of 4. This means you get more one-on-one instruction.

At this time you can choose to register to attend one of the following classes. Preregistration is required at least 2 weeks prior to class.

New Beginning Class Scheduled

I've re-thought the timing for the new beginning decorative painting class and have rescheduled it for Thurs mornings, starting Jan 26 (1/26, 2/2, 9, & 16), 10am - 1p.

We'll complete the basic painting in 4 weeks including your homework time. This is a fun painting which includes the basic techniques that we use in our paintings. Over the 4 weeks, you will practice these techniques as you work on your painting and complete your creation by the end of our class. By that time you'll be ready to continue painting with us in one of our regular Wed classes, either morning or evening.

Be sure to register by Jan 18th so that I can have everything ready for you.

Jan 26, Feb 2, 9, and 16, 10a - 1p. Basics in Decorative Painting in Acrylics. For anyone who hasn't painted with us. A terrific background to build you painting experience on. $200 includes basic supply kit, 3 brushes, and paints. Surface is not included.

2011 has been and exciting year at Artful Endeavors. We've had great classes with our terrific students exploring new subjects and techniques; wonderful seminars with Ros, such fun as usual, and Kathie where we were introduced to exciting watercolor techniques including Tjap batik; and the opportunity to meet some delightful prospective students.

I'm looking forward to our upcoming painting adventures in 2012. Have a wonderful new year and I will see you soon.

Holiday Schedule Dec 2011-Jan 2012

It's really here, the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012 is coming quickly. We've had a great year of painting at Artful Endeavors with terrific students, classes, seminars, and what ever else we could get paint onto. We have some wonderful paintings to show for this year's creative exploits, including more exciting "paint your own" designs from our talented and adventure seeking students.

Although our regular classes have ended for the year, we have a couple of classes we've added so that we can squeeze in as much painting as possible into 2011. So here is my schedule for the holidays:

Next week: I'll be in the studio Mon - Wed. If you would like to stop by, give me a call to make sure I haven't go out to run an errand.
Tue Dec 20 we will paint Trudy's Tree, with the snow bunnies, in Cary, 6:15p-8:30p.
Wed Dec 21 I'll have an open class in the Raleigh studio, 10a-12:30, and 2p-4P.

The studio will be closed from Dec 22-Jan 2.

Jan 4, 2012 is our Tjap workshop. 10a-2:30p. Those of us with Tjap stamps will have them available to share more of the fun and exciting batik techniques that Kathie George introduced to us. Join us for this play day! Supplies and paper included. $60 for those with out their own Tjap stamp. I've added a pay on line link so that you can register now.

We've been glad to have new students join our happy band of painters this year. Through our Deal Saver in the News and Observer I've met some "nice"( since this a boring word just by itself, I looked it up in the thesaurus and found the following adjectives of similar meaning which are all applicable) pleasant, kind, respectable, good-looking, accomplished, subtle, and fine individuals who are interested in painting and I'm hoping we'll see these students return to join us in the new year.

Plan ahead and join us for our Portrait Workshop in Feb. Start looking for that photo of someone that you would like to paint. You'll need to come talk to me about prep and colors before the class, so don't delay.

Nov 20th: Our seminar with Kathie was the best yet. The paintings turned out wonderful and everyone had a great time. Kathie was clear in her directions, helpful with adjustments, and patient will all of us. And the Tjap workshop was the very best at encouraging our creativity. So many exciting options for using the stamps and batik techniques.

A Few Results from the NC State Fair

So exciting! Verna Foster place second in the NC St Fair arts and photography amateur painting division with her still life. Congratulations Verna.

I'm so proud of all our painters who entered their paintings in the fair exhibits. Congratulation to all who won ribbons. I'll have photos a little later.

Congratulations to Margaret Vopelak one of our local decorative painters who earned Best in Show Professional for patterned decorative painting at the NC State Fair. It was a beautiful floral. I hope you all go by to see these wonderful paintings if you live locally.

Dianne Wooldridge earned a red ribbon for her impressive south western still life at the NC State Fair. Congratulations to Dianne. Emiko earned a blue ribbon for her beautiful pink tulips and Mary Webb took blue with her wonderful mother goose child's table.

Artful Endeavors October News

I’ve resisted changing email accounts for many years but now is the time. We have a new email address at the studio. artfulendeavors@raleigh.twcbc.com Be sure to change us in your email addresses. The earthlink account will be active till the end of the month, but then it will pass away.

This summer and especially this fall have brought many changes to Artful Endeavors, technologically wise, and I’ve been busily keeping up with the updates. I love the new Droid that will do our credit card charges plus much more; I love my new computer, and now I have amazing high speed internet like the rest of the world; I now have a better phone system with long distance coverage; and we have a wonderful new studio in which to paint in Cary, Chambers Arts studio! All of these changes were brought about by trials and tribulations, (sigh). Rick and I always believe that if we just pay attention, we will happen onto serendipitous occurrences that will turn out to be beneficial and sometimes even delightful.

Now about painting classes, we’re updating the schedule constantly with projects that catch our fancy. Look for holiday and winter themed projects as well as new techniques and ideas. Check our schedule on line frequently for updates.

My watercolor rose class is coming up on Oct 29, that’s a Saturday. Let me know by Oct 15^th, that’s next week!, if you are interested in painting with us so that I can plan. I’ll be on vacation the week before the class and need to get you prepared before I leave. I know it’s not a pumpkin or ghost, but it’s sure to be a Halloween treat.

We’ve taken our paintings to the NC State Fair for the decorative painting exhibition. When I took my paintings I saw lots of exciting decorative painting already there. We’re hoping for a big dp display this year so be sure to stop by and see our exhibit. For anyone who goes to the fair and can tell me all of the 7 item that I took this year I’ll have a nice $upri$e. When you visit the exhibit be sure to talk to others who are checking out our paintings and tell them about our studio and classes.

On that same topic, I have advertizing cards for you to spread the word about our studio and classes. Ask me for some.

Are you doing your holiday shopping? I have lots of paintings at the studio that are for sale if you want some for someone special. I’ll have some of them on line as soon as I can get a little time to post them so you can even order from me.

And, We have gift certificates for class and supplies. Tell your family that you would like a gift certificate from Artful Endeavors. I know you need some new brushes. I also have cards, holiday and otherwise, to send to your friends.

Tip: Think about printing your own cards to send this year. Take a digital file to one of the office supply stores or printers and have them make cards for you. What a special treat for those you think of during the holidays.

I wanted to show you some of the fun we had at our anniversary open house. The painters had fun creating cat’s eyes dominoes. And we picked up some new students!

I mentioned my upcoming vacation, yeah, at the end of the month. It’s time for our yearly trip to the mountains with my family, and lots of picture taking of the wonderful fall scenery. Hope there is still a little color left on the trees by the time we get there because we’re going a little later than usual, although that could have its own benefits.

I’ll be out of the studio Oct 22-28^th.

Carol will be teaching her beautiful, textured glass, poinsettia ornament while I’m on vacation. Don’t miss this class!

It's a beautiful fall day here in Raleigh and I'm at the studio trying to decide what to start first for the day. Outside our windows I can see sunshine on the trees which are just starting to display some of their potential for a colorful season. Inside the tables are cluttered with remnants of our busy week of painting.

The month of October here at the studio promises to be lively with paintings for autumn, Halloween, Christmas, ornaments, and our current favorite, landscapes; we're starting new students in the Raleigh evening classes; our Cary classes move to a new location, Chambers Arts, beginning next week; and I have a vacation at the end of the month. Time for another of Rick and my inspirational, photo taking, time away from our usual routine, vacations. The"boss" said I could have a week off and Carol will be teaching on Wed morning, a beautiful white poinsettia ornament with some of DecoArt's texture glass for embellishment. The State Fair is happening and I'm looking forward to seeing our extensive decorative painting display in the Crafts and Hobbies building. It's always the highlight of the fair for Rick and I and the first place we go once we arrive. Also, I'm taking a watercolor class from Lynda Chambers that should be lots of fun as well as educational. I hope to have more fun watercolor techniques to share.

The Decorative Painter wants my latest original painting for the first issue of 2012. I'm not going to post the photo, so you must come by the studio soon to see the painting before I ship it off to Wichita. It's a landscape, still life, animal, nature scene. Curious?
I'm adding our newest class selections to the schedule. The students have chosen some tantalizing new designs, different than our past undertakings. Be sure to check the class schedule.

New Location For Our Cary Art Classes

We’ll paint at Chambers Arts, an art studio/gallery in Ashworth square behind Ashworth drugs on Academy St. The Gallery is in the corner beside the Russian Art Gallery. Lynda Chambers, the owner/artist, was very nice and is enthusiastic about us having classes at her studio. I think this will be a good move for us and expose us to more art experiences. We may even pick up more students. Lynda teaches watercolors and acrylic, and is a chef and writer. She hosts other art and writing classes and workshops at the studio. Gayla found this wonderful place for us. There is plenty of parking in front of the studio.

If you get a chance please visit the studio. Introduce yourself to Lynda. She’s the one with the arm half cast. The studio is open for First Friday tomorrow evening.

Our classes will start there on Oct 4 at 6:15-8:30p as usual.

What a busy couple of weeks! And I can't just sit down and say what I have been doing. Does that happen to you?

I did paint a colorful fall scene last week that I'm loving. It's making me think of that fall nip in the air and that feeling of excitement. This class starts this month on Wed mornings. There's still time to join us.

Oh yes, Betsey and I went to Litchford nursing home again where I demonstrated the queen anne's lace painting. The residents seem to enjoy our visits and it's nice to feel like I am supporting our older citizens. Betsey has been a big help in involving the residents and keeping the activity moving. Our group is getting larger each week. I think the bingo game following us may have something to do with that. If you'd like to go with us any time please let me know. I'm trying to schedule a visit each month.

The NC State Fair is coming up soon! Have you chosen your paintings to enter yet? You can help the studio out by entering. We need to get the word out there that we have some exciting, beautiful painting happening at the studio. There are thousands of people passing through the Crafts and Hobbies building during the week that we can impress and possibly interest in painting with us. I want this to be the largest decorative painting exhibit yet so that they have to make more room for us (and hopefully build us a new building). This is a terrific advertizing opportunity and I appreciate you help.

Did you buy the Deal Saver for the Introduction to Acrylic Painting? Here is the schedule and a little class information to answer your question.

Welcome to an Introduction to Acrylic Painting art class, taught by Liz Miller, CDA. No previous experience is needed to enjoy this class.

The package for this two-hour course includes a canvas and all art supplies at the class. Class size will be limited to 10 – 12 students with a minimum of 4. This means you get more one-on-one instruction.

At this time you can choose to register to attend one of the following classes. Preregistration is required at least 2 weeks prior to class.

Our fall schedule has developed with some exciting painting to come. We have a still life, another create your own landscape, a wonderfully loose old world patio design, one of Ros' new fruit designs that she taught during this year's seminar, and even a Christmas ornament as well as Jo Sonja's Santa with Reindeer. Our workshops are by request and are some of our most popular designs, Jo Sonja's Potting Shed in Sept and my Ship in the Window this month. We've just finished a wonderful week of painting with Ros Stallcup. Lots of fun painting, eating, and fellowship. Everyone journeyed home on Sunday with many beautiful paintings to show for their week.

Blue is the color of the ocean and sky at the NC coast where I am headed tomorrow. I’m looking forward to teaching a seminar this weekend and then to a week’s vacation with my family at the beach. Actually I’ll be doing research for our ocean paintings, right? I will check on emails periodically during the week but no one will be at the studio.

Ros’ paintings are at the studio and we’re excited about painting with Ros again this year. I have sent out the prep so if you didn’t get the email, please let me know. I have prep at the studio for our local students as well as surfaces for our attendees.

We just finished painting Safe Harbor on Wed evening and I was painting along with the class. Here is my completed painting. It turned out so nice that we may paint it in a day class if there is interest. I love painting the choppy waters and moody sky. We ended up with some wonderful mood paintings. Artful Endeavors Update

Have you missed hearing from me? I have lost use of the studio internet connection on my PC and had trouble transferring all my email info over to my laptop. I’m having to reenter all the email addresses so if you know of anyone not getting my email updates and news, please tell them to let me know. So far, I only have my current student addresses reentered.

We just finished painting the sunflower basket on Wed and I wanted to show you the beautiful paintings our students created. Lots of variety from the same design as we enjoyed painting loose.

Now our evening class has decided to paint this fun design so it you missed it in Cary or in the morning, you can paint it with us in July in our evening class.

We had talked about having my open watercolor rose class this Sat, June 4, but there is not enough time to prepare and get the word out. We'll schedule it for a Sat later in the summer.

We are having the basic watercolor rose class starting next Wed evening and there is still time to join us.

Our classes last weekwere exciting. We started the Safe Harbor fishing boat Wed evening with indications that it’s going to turn out terrific. I’m looking forward to seeing it develop. In our day class we’re into our still life design workshop with each student working on their own individual design. They are enthusiastically meeting the challenges of their painting, learning lots, and have fun along the way. We have a short lunch break filled with socializing worked into our schedule too.

Our Cary painters are painting the beautiful Crimson Beauty. Such a lot of new techniques to explore. The loose techniques in this painting lend themselves to quite a bit of variety in our paintings. I love the colors in this painting.

We have more great workshops coming up soon.

· Next week is our Barn Cat workshop on Friday morning.

· On June 15 we have the Mountain Trail at 6:30p, another Simply Art class. Bring a friend!

· Saturday, May 21 is our Watercolor Sheep workshop from 9a-4p. We’re learning more about watercolor and enjoying ourselves.

· We have a choose your own Batik workshop, June 22, 10a – 4p. Be sure to register early and plan ahead for this workshop. You will choose your own batik from Kathie George’s designs or my designs. I’ll assist everyone as needed.

Just finished the painting that I started during the tornado before I ran for the basement. The studio is fine and no damage at home.

This is a beautiful Gloria Perking design that I painted in acrylics. It was so much fun. Love the colors and the loose style. Class starts in Cary next week and Raleigh in June. Come join us!

We have a new name for our START classes! Simply Art. I think this new name helps convey the idea of art classes for the novice painter or easy classes for our more experienced painters that enjoy the convenience of completing a project in a single class.

Spread the word . We want to get the Simply Art concept out there as a fun 2 hr class where no prior experience is expected, all supplies included, and the painter walks away with a finished painting. An enjoyable activity to share with friends or family, or a way to meet new friends.

Tip: remember, if you want your flat brush to retain a flat, held together shape, hold it at a low angle to your surface and hold back from the ferrule. If you want your brush to split, hold it close to the ferrule with the handle more perpendicular to the surface.

When you are floating, you want a low angle for a smooth application. Shade once, walk out, and let it dry. You can always go back when it's dry and strengthen or adjust your shading. If you continue to "play" in your tender acrylic paint you will be pulling it off and not smoothing it out. Then you have a bigger problem to fix.

We had another wonderful group of painters with us this past Friday for a painting party. Their baskets of geraniums turned out so nice. We had novices as well as experienced painters and every painting was the same and totally different. This was another of our START classes.

Carolina Red Mud

When I was growing up as a child in NC, my mother's parents lived "in the country" where my mother was born and raised. In Rowan county we have red clay, red dust, and red foot prints tracked into the house. It was what we knew. Didn't everyone have red dirt? We always had a wonderful garden and supplied the family with a plentiful harvest of vegetables for eating fresh or canning for delicious cold weather meals.

After a substantial rain, the red dirt at the edge of my grandfather's driveway developed a slick coat of red clay which, when dried by the sun, cracked, creating enticing thin red clay tiles. Fascinated by these exciting creations of nature I would squat by the driveway for hours playing and building with the mud tiles. What fun!

Today, instead of red clay mud and tiles, I have art products to use for my creations such as paints, mediums, and texture products as well as techniques for mixing, blending, glazing, and mingling. And again, I am a child squatting by the driveway at my grandfather's house, fascinated by my creations, this time with a wealth of products, surfaces, and paints. It's as much fun as mud pies!

Cleaning Paint Brushes

One of my students asked me this week to explain how I clean my paint brushes. Her brushes were splitting and frazzeling. I thought this sounded like good information for the blog so here it is.

I paint in acrylics. It's important to take good care of your brushes if you want them to do good work for you.
Cheap brushes are more expensive because you go through a lot of them to get a brush that works well and they wear out quicker. It's important to have good brushes for painting with acrylics. I love the Scharff brushes. They are quality, have a great shape, and retain their shape if you care for them properly.

After painting I clean my brushes with DecoArt's DecoMagic liquid brush cleaner. I pour some out on my palette, or my glass table top, and work my wet brush in the liquid, pushing and pulling, lifting the handle to spread out the bristles and wiggling the brush side to side. I make sure I have the paint worked out of the ferrule by grasping the bristles in my left hand while I wiggle the brush side to side. Then I rinse my brush thoroughly in cool water. If your brush is separating down the middle lengthwise, you are not getting the paint cleaned out of the ferrule..
I always lay my brush flat on the table to dry. Gravity will pull dirty paint water or slightly soapy water down into the ferrule, dry, and cause your brush to separate.

A Few More Brush Tips:

Brushes have a specific shape to perform a specific task. Try to keep them is that shape.

Old brushes have uses too. Like drybrushing. And letting the kids use them.

If you use a water basin with a ridged bottom, avoid pulling your brush across the ridges. If you can't remove the paint with just pouncing in one of flat bottomed section, pull your ferrule across the ridges just 2 or 3 times, in one direction, to vibrate paint out of the ferrule. Never pull the bristles across the ridges. This is like curling ribbon! Never pull your liner and smaller brushes across the ridges. Just flick them side to side in one of the small basin sections to clean and vibrate the paint from the ferrule.

I like the Master Brush Cleaner too. The 1/4 oz size if great for traveling.

If you have paint dried up in your brush ferrule, you can soak it in DecoMagic awhile, then clean as above. Winsor & Newton Brush Cleaner and Restorer is also excellent for removing dried paint. Just remember it eats plastic so use a glass container for the the solution.

It's much easier to paint with a good brush. If you take care of your brushes they will paint nicely for you.

Here are some additional tips from Scharff:

Always clean your brushes immediately after every use.
Never let the paint dry on your brush.
Never use the cleaning tubs with a rippled bottom. This is not the proper way to clean your brushes. It is a very good way to ruin your brushes.
Do not let a brush stand in water or cleaning solvents for any length of time. This will cause the liquid to leach into the handle and swelling will occur in the wood. This will lead to the paint chipping off and the ferrule becoming loose.
After thoroughly cleaning your brushes, store them lying flat or with the ferrules up. Never store your brushes on the hair.

Since we no longer have a dedicated Wed afternoon group of painters, the afternoon painting hours will becoming more flexible. This way you won’t have to choose as often between two projects, both which you would like to paint. Also some of the classes will occur from 10a-2:30p or something similar, so that we have a longer time to paint and won’t have to clean up our areas and put supplies back out as often, not to mention more driving time ($$$ Spend money on classes rather than gas$$$). You painters that can only painting in the afternoons don’t need to worry. We’ll still have time for you to paint. Just talk to me and we’ll make some plans that work good for you.

Be sure to check the schedule carefully to find the length and dates of each class. I’m looking forward to this flexibility and all the possibilities it offers us.

We have some exciting painting planned such as our still life workshop and more landscape painting, as well as my new Redbud and Sweet gum design. Remember that the students that are currently painting help us plan the schedule, so be sure you join us. I’m working on a 2-21/2month schedule at a time so we are constantly adding or editing our schedule to keep it current.

I have interest sheets on the bulletin board in the studio for you to express your interest in classes, so be sure to add your name to the lists or let me know by email which classes you plan to attend. This helps me plan ahead so that I can be ready for you. If no interest is shown for any class, we’ll change it. We want to keep the schedule fresh.

Be sure to check the schedule on line frequently for class updates. You can register by sending a check to the studio to drop by to bring your check and pick up prep. Register for classes at least a week in advance and help me have your supplies ready for you.

I depend on you to help me with spreading the word about our painting and classes. If you or a family member have a group (church, friends, children, organization, party…) who might like to plan a special class, please present the idea to them. We can do a 2 hr class, no experience needed, and just have a painting party. If you have and idea for something like this, let me know and we can share details. I appreciate all of your help in letting others know about our wonderful, artful, interests. It’ s our studio and our shared passion and we want to continue painting.

And remember the START classes, our painting parties! Just painting fun. Bring a friend and come join us.

I just took a short delightful and informative web trip to Tracy Moreau's blog. I've always enjoyed Tracy's paintings and art. She has a definitely adventurous spirit and is a wealth of knowledge on background techniques. And, she has wonderful used for the DecoArt products including the wonderful texture stencils that she designed for them.

I also found her series of short articles on the great master artists. Her blog is very interesting and fun.

We're in the midst of a landscape class where each student has brought a photo of a landscape that they wanted to paint. I though it would be fun to post their thoughts as they progress through this class.

Each painting is different. We have learned about painting techniques for creating our common elements such as sky, water, grass. . . . and talked about painting theory such as perspective, value changes . . . . Now the students are working on the individualized elements in their paintings creating such wonderful art.

Here are some of their thoughts as we progress. I'll post more as I receive emails from them.

I'll have to admit I was a bit nervous about taking the landscape class. I liked the security of step - by -step instructions you gave when everyone was working on the same thing. Now with everyone in class doing something different, and more generalized instruction, we have to think more for ourselves. This has allowed me room to grow as an artist. It builds confidence and creativity........plus I can ALWAYS count on you to fix something I mess up! Now, I'll go back to painting my mountains.........Amy B

This landscape painting class has been a challenge, but ultimately a good growth experience. One of the best parts is the encouragement of the other painters who see a talent in your work that you don’t really believe is there. Liz can make the theory of painting come alive at the end of her student artist’s brushes. I recommend this type of class to anyone who paints. We've added classes to our schedule for March! I'm working on samples and will have them posted as soon as I get them completed.

I have a new shipment of paints in the studio from DecoArt including, tada tada. . . . the newest colors and they are yummy! Persimmon, Sea Glass, Coral Blush, Mulberry (one of my personal favs) and Purple Wave a must have for you purple fans.

We also have a new shipment of surfaces at the shop. More of our favorites.

Bird Watcher Batik

Here is my painting of the week, Kathie George's Bird Watcher Batik, and so much fun. I love the kitties. I wanted this batik to have nice vivid colors I and was pleased with the outcome. Hope you like it too.

I just finished the watercolor rose. It's not quite dry, but here it is. I was tickled with the way this painting turned out and am having loads of fun experimenting and playing with watercolors.

After receiving the newsletter from Kingsland and Gibilisco, where Mary discussed color trends, I did some research. These articles are interesting. Check out the links if you'd like to read more.

Everything Old Is New and Improved: "this palette conveys modernized nostalgia, in that it’s not duplicating a previous time period, but applying modern technology to it." From 2011 fashion color trends by Lee Eiseman.

Leaf Study Workshop

The information that we explore in our leaf study workshops is usually flexible and Saturday was no exception. I had painted a new leaf design with our class in mind. The painting lead us into discussing many elements that go into creating a good design: focal area, value, intensity, color temperature, and more. We also worked on our effective leaf base coating techniques; creating folds, flips, and rolled edges; water drops, and bug bites. They left with their brains full and lots of techniques and theory to work on and digest.

The student's decided to schedule a follow up class to reinforce all the information that we covered in Saturday's class. Watch for more leaves on the workshop schedule.

Here are photos of my painting in progress. It's still not finished but the leaves are complete. In the photos below you can also see the original photos of the sweet gum leaves that grew in my backyard. The red bud is also from my yard and the generic leaves are my creation to include ripples, folds, and bug bites.

START Watercolor Kitties

I am in love with the START classes. These classes give me a chance to try a different type of art without outfitting myself with all of the necessary equipment.

I would never have tried the batik in a normal class

because the class projects looked so big and complicated but last week I took the bird batik and fell in love...

The project was greeting card size and you provided all of the required equipment. Since I took the class, I am

looking forward to trying another batik class and am not

as apprehensive.... more confident... thank you

And now I have tried the watercolor and it was a pure joy... and I now have two darling kittens portrayed in watercolor and again I would not have tried this in a regular class.... It was fun and of course you made it seem so easy... and I know that it isn't

I had had this canvas tote "based" (fabric medium applied) for the past 6 months, just waiting for the "perfect" design to inspire me. The sea shells were just the thing to put on it. . . . . Jan Decorative Painting Notes

Sounds like we may be in for some snowy, rainy, icy weather today and tomorrow. If we miss any classes this week due to the weather, we will push the class forward a week or make individual plans. Remember to check the web site for updates.

Advanced Leaf Study is this Sat. If you are interested please contact me immediately. We’ll address all those fun aspects of painting leaves and flowers, such as ripples, folds, torn edges, bug bites, and water drops. We’ll have a short review of basic leaf painting techniques. Then we’ll talk about varied leaf shapes. Sounds like fun to me!

Class time is 9a-2p. Bring a sandwich for a short lunch break. The weather so far sounds fine and not too cold.

I have prep ready for the Flowered Stairway starting Jan 19^th. Please stop by the studio to register and pick up your prep. If you missed the Tuscan Window, that wonderful Ros Stallcup design, and have already painted the Flowered stairway, see me about painting the window instead.

I’m finishing up the Sails, Flying Cloud sailing ship, for the Wed evening class starting Jan 26 and it’s looking real nice. I’ll have prep ready for you this week.

On Feb 2, we’ll start the Paint Your own Landscape that you requested, so you should be planning your landscape, finding reference photos, and seeing me to plan your prep. This will be an exciting class and such fun.

For all the classes, please add you name to the interest sheets on the board by the sink, or email me so that I can add your name. This helps me plan for the classes. And, if interest for any project is no longer there, we can plan a different class.

Seminars!

I talked with Ros Stallcup and we have our July seminar plans made. As soon as I can type them up for you, I’ll have a registration flier and registration will be open. Save the dates and register early. We have some exciting projects planned.

I have also talked with Ginger Edwards and we have our next seminar with Ginger planned for March 23, 24, and 25, 2012! I’ll have the project photos posted soon and registration will start this spring. Start thinking beautiful flowers, Ginger style.

I’ve packed up some painting homework and will head home in a little while to avoid the precipitation. Stay safe, warm and dry and I’ll see you back in class very soon.

More Winter Storm?

The weather reports are calling for more winter storms, especially south of us, but possibly in our area with poor driving conditions. This is a good time to review our inclement weather procedure.

1. If you don't feel safe driving, stay off the road. Most important is for you to be safe. I watch the weather reports to check the road conditions but you have to check your specific area.

2. Check the web site for studio status/closing. In our area we often have varying degrees of ice or snow on the road. Please check the web site to find out whether I'll be at the studio or keep the studio closed.

3. I live in the country on a secondary, or is it tertiary??, road, so may still have icy conditions when the roads in town are drivable. Please check the web site for updates. When I'm at home I don't have access to the email lists and can't contact all of you directly, so I post on the web site as soon as I know what the conditions are.

So, this week do you think we'll have more of that beautiful, white, fluffy stuff that melts and ices the roads in the mornings, or go straight to the cold, wet, icy rain that ices the roads in the mornings?

Painting in 2011

Our holidays are over. We've eaten, traveled, eaten,had wonderful visits, entertained, eaten, given gifts to those we care for, played with the children, eaten, watched the snow, and eaten some more. All of it fun and exhausting. I've had the flu, driven to Salisbury twice for Christmas with my sister, brother-in-law, and father... and New Years'/Christmas with the whole family, gotten snowed in, and gotten behind with my painting and eaten too much. I feel like a slug. But now I'm ready to get back to my usual activities...painting, teaching, dancing, zumba, jewelry making.... Oh yes, I forgot, low carb.

So let's paint! Classes start at the studio this week. We had a fun, full open house yesterday and I got to see and talk to students, prior students, new prospective students, and friends, all full of enthusiasm and wanting to start back painting. I passed out preps and showed "in progress" painting projects that will be our first. Thanks to all the painters that brought in their beautiful paintings for other to see. I'm always so proud of your work and want to show it off to others.

If you missed the open house, I'm at the studio this week and have preps ready for you. Come on by. Remember, classes start this week!
We have some excellent paintings planned and expect to learn lots and have enjoy ourselves.
If you are planning to paint your pet on Wed evenings starting this week, or the landscape on Wed mornings in Feb, you need to bring your photo to show me so that we can figure out your prep. I'm excited about these classes especially. You get to do your own design!

We have a new supply of brushes and paints in at the studio. A good way to use your gift certificates.

Be sure to check the classes page for our schedule and mark your calendars.

I'll have information for you very soon about our seminar with Ros Stallcup. We'll talk this week and plan our paintings. The dates are July17-23 with a day off on the 20th, that's 6 days of fun painting. Registration will open as soon as I get the info out to you.

Time for me to get back to painting our class samples. Which one will I paint on first?......

Artful Endeavors Painting in 2011

It's almost here and I'm getting classes, schedules, paintings, and party ready for 2011! Our New Year of Painting holiday party is coming up this Sunday.

We have a drop in open house on Sunday, Jan 2, from 2p-4p scheduled and hope you can join us.

I'll have class samples and photos of upcoming projects as well as prep for our projects starting next week. Come by to visit and pick up your prep. Bring a snack to share and a painting to show.

Bring your gift certificates and holiday money to shop. We have a new supply of the wonderful Scharff brushes, Traditions paints, and Americana paints. Pick up a surface for your next project and you'll be ready to paint.

Notice that the am class will start Ros' wonderful Tuscan Window. After that we have a Flowered Stairway to paint as a companion to the window.
In the afternoon we'll begin another of Linda Lock's textured Paris street scenes, Chat Noir (Black Cat). If you liked the Paris Cafe or Grocery, you'll want to paint this one to add to your collection.
The evening class is painting a pet! I have some of Lydia Steeves terrific books that you can choose a pet from unless you have good photos of your own pets that you'd like to paint.

A Few Results from the NC State Fair

I'm so proud of all our painters who entered their paintings in the fair exhibits. Congratulation to all who won ribbons. I'll have photos a little later.

Congratulations to Margaret Vopelak one of our local decorative painters who earned Best in Show Professional for patterned decorative painting at the NC State Fair. It was a beautiful floral. I hope you all go by to see these wonderful paintings if you live locally.

Dianne Wooldridge earned a red ribbon for her impressive south western still life at the NC State Fair. Congratulations to Dianne. Emiko earned a blue ribbon for her beautiful pink tulips and Mary Webb took blue with her wonderful mother goose child's table.
